Evan - I've been playing guitar for over 25 years. I play an acoustic with an electric pickup built in - that means its an acoustic guitar that you can also plug into an amp when you play for larger crowds, or for the effects.I won't get into which brands are better or worse or whatever, its a VERY subjective issue. I play an Ovation that I LOVE, but many ppl don't like them.Go to a guitar store or call one, and tell them you are interested in starting to play - have a salesperson sit with you for a while - they can play different guitars and show you some of the basic differences. THen you can decide which sounds/features you like - deeper bass, clearer treble, lower or higher action (how high the strings are off of the neck), etc.BUT- all this being said - you don't have to spend a lot of $ for your first guitar. I just bought a relatively inexpensive yamaha ($140.00 with a gig bag, capo, strap, and some picks) for a second travel guitar. My Ovation would cost about 1200.00 to replace - so now I have a "bang around" guitar. It sounds nice, decent action, affordable, and suits all my purposes.OR - look in the paper for ppl selling used guitars as well.DEFINITELY have someone work with you about all the options. and DON'T fall for --- ooh.. the most expensive is the best.... learn on an affordable one, you can always buy a more expensive one later.PM me if you want more info. :DZman
