can someone edit this beast for me?i wrote the ctf techniques. 8) Capture the Flag Techniques
The Rules of the Game: So, you’ve decided that you want to hang out with all of the cool people in Jedi Knight II Outcast, and you’re wondering where to go. Obviously you see that people like to hang out in the Free for All servers, and most tend to avoid the Jedi Master and Holocron area. But, if you want to be where the real game is, and where the action heats up to a new intense level, head on over to Capture the Flag. Capture the Flag is a variant of the good ‘ol game that you may have played as a kid that involved going to the enemy’s base without getting tagged (in this game brutally mauled with a saber), getting the opposing flag, and return to your own base without someone else tagging (see: annihilating in JKII) you. Also, there is the fundamental rule that you cannot score with the flag until your own flag has been returned. It’s a fairly simple enough game, and very fast-paced. On your first entrance into the Capture the Flag area you probably noticed that most of the servers have no force. Now, any avid-minded Outcast player is probably thinking, how can you play a capture the flag game without force and still have fun? At this point, the more experienced player may argue that it isn’t fun, and then mumble something about the good ‘ol days with force and even throw in the word “hax”, but the other player may mention to read the next section in Gramps’ article.
No Force, And You: So, you have just come over the thought of not being able to use force in most servers for Outcast. This may seem like a big challenge, but many of us have overcome it, and about 50% of us still think that this may have been the best decision for this game-type. No one may ever know if this is what the developers had in mind for this type of game, but whatever the reason, there is a way to do it and still enjoy oneself. Let’s go over the fundamentals.
Bunny Hopping: Obviously, one of the first things that may have crossed your mind when reading about the no force rules was, how do people get around and keep up speed without being able to use force speed or force at all? Enter bunny hopping. This unique and original innovation developed by Outcast players allows people to go just as fast, if not faster at a certain point, than using force run, and is a great way to “chase” people when they have the flag. It is a common technique that you will see most if not all of the players doing, that are experienced. It is the fastest way to get around on multiplayer, and allows one to maneuver themselves with great ease. Also, due to the physics engine that Outcast has, it is easy to build up speed and get momentum to go great distances in a short amount of time. Actually doing this move involves holding the forward key down, and then remain holding it down and jump. As you jump, you will move forward in midair. While in midair, and right as you hit the ground, press jump again and hold forward (angling mouse in the direction of where you want to go) to do the bunny hop. This may feel awkward at first, but with practice you can bunny hop with the best of them, and actually get somewhere in Outcast. You cannot go far without this move, and it truly is essential to being a success at Capture the Flag.
Backslash, a Defensive Technique: So, you have just begun to play Outcast, and you are probably wanting to get somewhere in the game. There are two “sides” you can choose when playing the game. The first is the Offensive side where you try to go and get the flag and return it to your own base without dying, and the other is the Defensive side. Both sides are equally important to the game, and this technique is essential for either side. And probably more helpful for the “chasing” aspect of the Defensive side (going after the flag carrier when they have stolen your flag). This move, the backslash, is a very versatile move that is easy to use, maneuver, and to deal lots of damage to an enemy. It is also very, very fast and can deal lethal amounts of damage. You can do this either while you are bunny hopping, or just on the ground, and you do it by facing your back to the opponent, holding the back button, and attack. With practice this can easily be one of the best (and most “whored”) moves in Outcast. Another variant of this is the Double-Handed Backslash move that is done in the same way, but you press crouch while in midair (or on the ground), and you have both of your hands on the saber. This move is extremely difficult to try to do if you are just beginning, but it has great results, and deals a lot more damage. Also, it stays suspended around you for a second longer after it is executed that you can use to position to hit someone.
Death from Above: To do this move, please see the section entitled Saber Attack List, but this move is also very effective in the Capture the Flag environment. While it is not recommended to do while you have the flag, since it has the drawback of a couple of seconds where you are vulnerable to attack, it is however a great move for defense to cover the flag pedestal. Chasing a person and doing a DFA is not entirely recommended, unless you are fast enough to pull ahead of them and do it. A variant of the DFA is the “Spiked-DFA” which has you looking up into the sky while you do the attack, so that way you can position your saber upward in an arch to attack someone and deal damage.
Bind Kill: Reading this statement, you are probably wondering how binding a kill to a key can be any good at all. Obviously to someone looking in this looks like a dumb idea, because you not only lose a point, but you lose the life you just had. Au Contraire my friend. This simple bind is one of the most used binds in Capture the Flag and it is also very effective. By killing yourself you are placed in a position that is a lot closer to your base, and therefore allows you to go back and protect the flag all the sooner. For instance, lets say that your friend Hidalgo has the flag. Hidalgo is also right by the base, but a lot of people are swarming at the base to try to kill him. You are trying to kill the opposing flag carrier, and with a stroke of luck and a perfectly timed backslash, you succeed. Now, all of a sudden you want to get back to your base so that someone doesn’t take the flag before Hidalgo can score. What should you do? Press your handy bind kill move of course! Heck, even press it multiple times until you end up right where you want to be by the base, just in time to help Hidalgo get that finishing capture that your team needs to win the game. There may be a small penalty for doing so, but overall you help out the team.
Bind cg_ThirdPersonCameraDamp 0 : This is an excellent bind that allows you to go into third person mode, and also with the assistance of the other bind cg_thirdpersoncameradamp 0.3 to return to normal mode. This may seem like an odd request of a bind to have, but it is quite effective when you have the flag, or are trying to look around you when you are returning. Word to the wise, this bind is very difficult to become accustomed to at first, but it is very effective, and a lot of help when you have the flag.
Volume : Ever heard that pesky and/or classic music (depending on your viewpoint) in JKII? Everyone has, and it actually has some point to it. That is, when it’s off. A simple and very helpful technique that you can do to aid your JKII game in Capture the Flag is to turn your volume on high in game, and then turn down the actual Star Wars music. Following this, you turn up the gameplay volume to the max. By doing this, you are allowing yourself to be able to hear the people in Capture the Flag better, and to hear the saber swish to know when people are around you. The downside to bunny hopping is that it does make a very animated and loud noise that can be easily heard when executed, and if your gameplay volume is up, you can clearly hear when people are around you, and when people are coming through hallways and doorways.
